	Overview
	This module examines a range of significant moral theories which have firm historical roots and that remain living options in moral philosophy at the present time, e.g., virtue ethics (Aristotle), utilitarianism (Mill) and deontology (Kant). Attention, also, will be given to the application of these theories to some pertinent moral issues in society today, such as, for instance: �the relationship between happiness and morality�, �moral relativism and objectivity in moral judgement�; �environmental ethics�; �euthanasia�, and �selfishness and altruism�. The module will conclude by discussing whether certain moral standards can be postulated as generally accepted, or not, and upon which a criticism of the different ethical theories (including our own) could be based (Nietzsche, Levinas and Moore).

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Define moral philosophy and its place among other branches of philosophy (e.g. metaphysics, logic, epistemology, philosophy of religion). Compare different notions of the highest good (such as, Aristotle�s concept of the Good, Kant�s categorical imperative and Mill�s principle of utility). Assess Nietzsche�s critique of the validity of moral values and standards. Compare Moore�s and Nietzsche�s critique of traditional ethics. Articulate, through written and verbal communication skills, a philosophical approach to pertinent moral questions in society today, and discuss possible solutions for contemporary problems in moral philosophy. Evaluate particular topics in a moral philosopher (e.g., Nuyen�s use of Levinas�s approach regarding euthanasia and suicide within the context of his concept of �the Other�). Analyse Jonas�s argument that traditional ethics hold no adequate solutions for the new challenges of environmental ethics. Demonstrate, through addressing the questions set in the final written examination, the ability to select material learned that is relevant to what has been asked in the set examination questions.
