• Identify some essential themes in the thought of each of the twelve philosophers;
• distinguish various fundamental phases in the development of Western philosophy (e.g., ancient Greek, medieval, modern, contemporary);
• recognise some of the main branches that philosophy developed in the course of its history (e.g., ethics, philosophy of education, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of language);
• articulate the contribution philosophical reflection is able to make to real-life issues;
• engage in a philosophical conversation that draws on the insights of major thinkers;
• research and compose a philosophical essay.

• 36 lecture hours (3 lectures × 12 weeks) and 9 tutorial hours (1 × 9 weeks). Directed reading; reflection; discussion; and writing

• Module Graded (numeric value) or Ungraded (Pass/Not Passed): Graded
• Continuous Assessment detail(s): (1) attendance and participation in tutorials (10%); (2) one tutorial essay assignment (ca. 1,000 words) (40%); (3) one module essay assignment (ca. 1,500 words) (50%)

• Pass standard: 40%
• Could the result of this module be capped? No
• (1) attendance and participation in tutorials (20%); (2) one tutorial essay assignment (ca. 1,000 words) (30%); (3) one module essay assignment (ca. 1,500 words) (50%); required to pass
• Penalties: No

• Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes
• Final essay assignment (ca. 1,500 words = 50%). Marks for tutorial attendance and the tutorial essay will carry over.
