• Identify the origins of metaphysical thought among the pre-Socratics, with particular reference to Parmenides’ discovery of ‘being’ as a topic for enquiry.
• Outline and debate the development of metaphysics from Plato to Aristotle.
• Assess the contribution of Aquinas to metaphysics with specific reference to the real distinction between existence and essence.
• Discuss the impact of Scotism and nominalism on early modern thought.
• Discriminate between Aquinas’s and Heidegger’s views on the question of being.
