The development and changes in the philosophical discussions concerning e.g., the state and the individual, law and obligation, authority and rights, the common good, and the power of the ruler, will stand at the centre of this module. We shall historically examine some of the main political theories in Western philosophy roughly from Plato to Hobbes, that is, proceeding chronologically from antiquity to the early modern era. We shall particularly emphasize the transition from the late medieval thought to the modern speculations on politics.
