This module addresses some central political issues in contemporary philosophical thought, such as: the question of totalitarianism as a modern phenomenon; Berlin’s concept of freedom; Rawls’s theory of justice as fairness; the possible connections between moral values and politics; parameters for a pluralistic society; new challenges for ethics; the question of responsibility (both personal and collective) concerning issues such as environmentalism or euthanasia; and the relevance of forgiveness (both personal and collective) in contemporary political thought. The module also aims at showing the close connections between political and ethical issues. Key texts from important thinkers (e.g. Berlin, Rawls, Arendt, Habermas, Jonas, Jankelevitch and Derrida) will be featured.
