Module MEDIEVAL PHILOSOPHY AND CONTEMPORARY THOUGHT

Module code: PH341
Credits: 5
Semester: 1
Department: PHILOSOPHY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

This module examines a number of themes in medieval philosophy which are of contemporary interest. While there are important differences between medieval and contemporary thought, there are intriguing affinities, and engagement with the best medieval philosophy has to offer can help to stimulate philosophical reflection in our own times. The themes to be considered in the module will include the following: philosophy of time and history, philosophy of being, the transcendentals (‘One’, ‘True’, ‘Good’ and the question of the ‘Beautiful’), aesthetics (proportion, light and colour, symbolism), philosophy of education (teaching, learning and the ‘idea of the university’), philosophy of mind and knowledge, logic and language, philosophy and public affairs. The emphasis of the module on philosophical thinkers and thought, medieval and contemporary, will be complemented by some consideration of the ‘presence of the medieval’ in literature and film.
