This module examines the development of the twentieth century phenomenological movement in philosophy, concentrating in particular on the different ‘scientific’ and ‘hermeneutic’ methods that were devised and used by various thinkers who originated and spearheaded this development. Selected extracts from texts by Franz Brentano (1838–1917), Edmund Husserl (1859–1938), Wilhelm Dilthey (1833–1911), Martin Heidegger (1889–1976) and Emmanuel Levinas (1906–1995) will be identified and serve as the central focus of analysis and discussion for this module.
