Module ETHNIC MINORITIES IN EUROPE: A COMPARATIVE PERSPECTIVE.

Module code: PO307
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: SOCIOLOGY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

The course addresses a central challenge to modern nation-statehood (ethnic diversity) in the context of European integration, allowing students to deploy knowledge on both institutions and Europe/international organisations acquired throughout their studies. The course is informed by approaches from comparative politics and International relations, thus building on first and second year core politics modules. More specifically, it introduces the different institutionalisms and is designed to encourage students to take a specific theoretical perspective (e.g. sociological institutionalist, rational choice institutionalist) when approaching their subject. Thematically, the first half of the course will focus on historical developments in state-minority relationships, the rise and institutionalisation of minority rights, and the dynamics in the perception of minorities. The second part of the course addresses specific challenges, including minority rights as human vs group rights; geopolitics of minorities; European agenda for minority rights.
