	Overview
	The development of 'Celtic' society during the Iron Age in Europe is introduced with the principal focus being on archaeological evidence, but important historical sources and linguistic studies are also explored. The conflicting explanations for the origins of the Irish and the presence of Celtic language and culture in Ireland is examined, special attention given to sites such as Emain Macha (Navan Fort) and Tara, and the phenomenon of ritual human sacrifice.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Identify the variety of archaeological, historical and linguistic sources for the study of the Celts. Discuss the background to, and history of, the development of the concept of the 'Celts'. Detail chronologically the main developments in the European Iron Age from Hallstatt beginnings to the Roman conquest of Spain, Gaul and Britain. Delineate the broad characteristics of Hallstatt and La Tene society and describe the principal archaeological and historical evidence. Evaluate the processes that led to the adoption of Celtic culture and language in Ireland. Appraise critically the relevant secondary and at least some of the primary literature.
