	Medieval Ireland's greatest epic raises a host of interesting issues revolving round the fundamental question as to whether it should be regarded as a backward looking ''window on the Iron Age'' or as a monastic composition with an essentially contemporary point of reference. The story will be analysed in English translation and placed in its proper narrative and social context.

Medieval Ireland's greatest epic raises a host of interesting issues revolving round the fundamental question as to whether it should be regarded as a backward looking ''window on the Iron Age'' or as a monastic composition with an essentially contemporary point of reference. The story will be analysed in English translation and placed in its proper narrative and social context.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Describe the main characters and features of the Ulster cycle of tales. Be familar with the main narratives of the cycle, esp. the T�in B� C�ailnge Describe the status of the Ulster cycle of tales within and its relationship to other medieval Irish narrative complexes. Discuss the relevance of the Ulster cycle of tales as a 'window on the Iron Age' and alternative approaches to this question. Critically and independently analyse sources relating to the Ulster cycle.
