The module will study the mutual relationships of female deities and male rulers as represented in Early Irish literature, and consider their roles in the ideology of Early Irish kingship. Accordingly, sovereignty, in the figure of the male king and various manifestations of female personifications of the land is an integral part of early Irish belief system and these aspects will be examined from a series of extant seminal texts in early Irish narrative literature. Thus the importance of the union between goddess and rightful king is explored in detail.
