This module will explore the nature of the medieval Irish educational system, and the full range of subjects on the early medieval Irish curriculum will be explored, including grammar and the philosophy of language; biblical exegesis; geography; history; law and legal commentary; and poetic composition. Of particular interest will be the question of whether or not there were distinct systems of education for ‘secular’ and ‘ecclesiastical’ individuals, or whether there was a unified system of education controlled by the Church. We will look at literary depictions of scholars – both male and female – and consider whether textual and visual images of saintly learning correspond with the surviving legal and historical information about the nature of the education available to scholars in medieval Ireland.
