This course examines Mexican and Chicana/o literature and film, with reference to key issues in the relationship between Mexico and the Chicana/o community in the United States, such as political and metaphorical borders, distinctive use of Spanish and code switching, gender and class divisions and subaltern and transnational identities. The objective of the module is to introduce the student to Mexican and Chicana/o literature and film, from early theatre to contemporary poetry, films and novels.
This course introduces students to the main developments in the relationship between Mexico and the Mexican diaspora in the United States though a variety of literary texts by Mexican writers, such as Octavio Paz and Carlos Fuentes, and through the works of Chicano/a writers, such as Luis Valdez, Sandra Cisneros, and Josefina López.
