Engineering is the science of applying interdisciplinary knowledge and mathematical principles to analyse and solve practical problems, and to design, build and deliver innovative systems and technology for society. We live in a world shaped by engineers and their inventions.  Much of what we take for granted today - Smartphones, computers, cars, the internet, electricity, television, robotics, and advanced healthcare and medical systems would not exist without the creativity and skill of engineers.

By combining fundamental sciences with engineering, the engineering science programme bridges the gap between science and the application of science and provides students with the skills to tackle the global challenges of our age.

As an engineering science student at NUIM you will learn:

How to apply knowledge of electronic systems and fundamental sciences to analyze and solve complex problems;

How to conduct experiments and analyse data;

How to design a system to meet specified needs;

How to communicate effectively with the technical community and society at large.

The core themes of the programme are computer programming, embedded systems, mathematical analysis and modelling tools, system design and system integration. These themes are developed through a combination of lectures, laboratory classes and projects.  Our project based learning approach ensures that you will acquire hands on experience and practical skills. Entrepreneurial, creativity and communication skills are essential for everyone working in the commercial world - for example when developing a new product, leading a team or setting up a new business.  These skills are also taught and fostered through a series of structured activities throughout the Programme.

Applicants are required to have a minimum of six subjects in the Irish Leaving Certificate with two Higher Level papers at C3 and four Ordinary or Higher Level papers at grade D3
