Module PHARMACEUTICAL CHEMISTRY I

Module code: CH308C
Credits: 5
Semester: 2
Department: CHEMISTRY
International: Yes
Overview Overview

Formulation Chemistry and Drug Delivery Systems, Structural Elucidation of Bio-molecules.

This module examines two important areas of pharmaceutical chemistry:
(i) Formulation Chemistry and Drug Delivery Systems. The course introduces the principles and purpose of formulation chemistry and drug delivery systems and the main physicochemical aspects relevant to formulation. It reviews the different types of dosage forms according to the route of administration, including modified and controlled release drug delivery systems, and the application of liposomes and nanoparticles to targeted drug delivery. The different components of a pharmaceutical formulation and the factors to consider in the choice of a suitable dosage form are discussed.
(ii) Structural determination of bio-molecules: Material covered includes: Structure of bio-molecules for example, proteins, nucleic acids, carbohydrates and fats; chemical analysis of proteins and peptides, ESI, MALDI and Tandem Mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy and hardware development, FT-NMR, 2-D NMR, X-ray crystallography.
