Module GLOBAL CITIZENSHIP EDUCATION

Module code: EDF631
Credits: 2.5
Semester: 2
Department: FROEBEL EDUCATION
International: No
Coordinator: Aoife Titley (FROEBEL EDUCATION)
Overview Overview

Through this module, student teachers are provided with an opportunity to engage with concepts such as inequality, justice and solidarity, in a way that will support newly qualified teachers to facilitate quality teaching and learning for all pupils. Topics such as global poverty, social justice, fair trade, activism, culture, migration, human rights and anti-racism will be explored both theoretically and experientially as a model for classroom practice. Multiple perspectives are provided through guest lecturers sharing their narrative experiences, with a particular emphasis on the educational experiences of the Traveller community and those who have lived through the system of direct provision in Ireland. Student-teacher confidence and competence in global citizenship education is enhanced through the addition of a discrete school placement opportunity, whereby in groups, students collectively plan a station teaching exercise on a ‘controversial issue’. This placement is hosted by a partner school, with high levels of diversity within the pupil population, affording student-teachers the opportunity to enact culturally responsive pedagogy in practice.
