	Overview
	This module will examine the property rights of non-formal owners of land and housing, the majority of the population in many countries of the Global South. In every continent land and housing has been commodified leaving unregistered property owners vulnerable to dispossession. Traditional owners are often pitted against the state in a struggle over resources and the meaning of democracy and development. This module will unpack the relationship of people to property: rural small holdings and urban informal settlements. The module will examine case studies from Latin America, Africa and Asia.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Understand the complexity of relationships to property, the philosophical and legal theories underpinning property. Gain an insight into international forces shaping the relationship between people, land and property. Analyse the role of the state and democratic institutions in upholding the property rights of citizens. Critically engage with the debates on causes and solutions to informal settlements in low income countries.

	Autumn Supplementals/Resits
	Are supplemental/resit registrations permitted? Yes Resit students must submit their continuous assessment by a date before the Autumn examination, which will be specified by the department. Students are responsible for familiarising themselves with this deadline. If students do not submit by the deadline, the existing continuous assessment mark will be carried forward to the Autumn. No continuous assessment work will be accepted after this date. This will apply except upon presentation of a medical certificate covering the relevant period or in other extremely extenuating circumstances, which must be communicated to, and accepted by, the lecturer prior to, or immediately after, the relevant deadline.
