It is argued that the sole non-imitable resource that organisations have are their human resources. This module considers Human Resource Management and its practices. Using theory and case examples, this module guides students to appreciate how human resource management (HRM) empowers organisations to achieve sustainable competitive advantage through people. The module begins by considering the emergence of HRM and key principles of effective people management. The module then moves on to evaluate different forms of work, careers and the implications for HRM. The module also introduces a range of core HRM practices including resourcing, employer branding, total reward, competence and performance management and the future of work. The module provides important insights into the nature of contemporary work, careers and people management.
