	Overview
	Students often think about composers as very distant figures who lived hundreds of years ago and whose lives - or even their music - has very little immediate relevance to their own. This course challenges that common belief by looking at the life and music of Schubert, and considering how the two relate. Schubert composed 600 of his 928 works by the age of 21, faced numerous personal challenges within his own short life, and yet went on to release his life's aim and world renowned, lasting fame for doing what he wanted to do most: to compose. This is a course which shows the importance of our friends in helping us to reach our goals. This is a course about having the courage to believe in ourselves, to be inspired by a historical figure from who we can still learn so much. It is a course about musical biography and the class will introduce students to a range of very memorable, thought-provoking works which will remain with students far beyond their college life.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Appraise how music is shaped by society and also shapes society and discuss that idea in relation to a variety of musical works Be able to discuss works which are directly related to a composer�s biography and also problematize the vexed question in the biography as to how � or whether � pathways between life and art can be mapped Understand how musical works raise broad existential questions that are compelling for example: what is the human condition? What is the nature of the world in which we find ourselves? And what does music tell us about our place in the world Be able to discuss the life and works of Franz Schubert who made a mark on music history when he was the same age as the students: to understand the role of friendship in the evolution of his musical style and to be inspired by his transcendence of incredible life challenges to realize his life�s aim Discuss issues of identity and their fluctuations in Schubert and a composer of their choice.
