Visual communication is an essential part of the designer’s toolkit. Effective visual communication aids the comprehension and sharing of research data, a new innovative solution or elements of a service or system. This module introduces the methodologies and tools of visual communication and leaves students with the essential skills to generate new graphics and manipulate images for both print and digital media. These skills are particularly relevant to the creation of a designer’s portfolio. The portfolio provides prospective employers with evidence of the designer’s repertoire and quality, and will be a key deliverable of this module.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the modules, students should be able to:
• Understand the importance and potential of effective visual communication.
• Discern and discuss the difference between good and bad visual communication.
• Have a working knowledge of the principals and tools of visual communication
• Be skilled in the approach to designing new graphics to effectively communicate different types of information.
• Understand the role and requirements of a professional design portfolio.
