	In this module, various tales in the Irish and European literary tradition will be studied which centre around the theme of the 'love triangle', i.e. the motif of the relationship between, typically, an old king marrying a young woman who falls in love with a young man.

In this module, various tales in the Irish and European literary tradition will be studied which centre around the theme of the 'love triangle', i.e. the motif of the relationship between, typically, an old king marrying a young woman who falls in love with a young man.

	Learning Outcomes
	On successful completion of the module, students should be able to: Identify and describe the key elements of the literary motif of the "love triangle" (the "Tristan and Iseult"-motif). Describe its development and modes of appearance in early Medieval Irish literature. Be familar with the central tales that contain the motif and describe their position within Medieval Irish literature. Make connections of the 'Tristan and Iseult'-motif with other central motifs of Medieval Irish literature (e.g. the ruler's truthfulness). Critically and independently analyse sources relating to the theme of the "love-triangle".
