This course explores the interlinked and conflicting processes of globalisation from above - the development of large-scale economic, political and cultural structures, which span the globe - and globalisation from below - the development of interlinked struggles asserting human need against the primacy of profit. The course discusses key actors in this process, such as multinational corporations, global financial and political institutions, local anti-capitalist networks and the alter-globalisation movement. It also looks at some of the central issues and areas involved, such as economic and social inequality, the use of state power, and conflicts over cultural homogenisation. It aims to enable students to position themselves as active and informed citizens of the developing global society.
