• Identify key issues in Latin American culture and society; examine key political and social developments in Latin America from the time of the Conquest to the present.
• Describe different periods in Latin American history and explain how the Conquest has shaped modern Latin America.
• Distinguish between various regions of Latin America and assess why their development has been different in the light of their specific cultures, economies and political systems.
• Debate issues such as the role of the Church in Latin America and the different views of the Cuban Revolution as a Socialist republic or dictatorship.
• Critique and evaluate texts in lectures and tutorials with reference to theories of Latin America’s development.
• Write responses to exam questions, making convincing arguments based on reading of primary and secondary material and explaining key issues in Latin American history relevant to the question.
