1. Students who have NOT STUDIED ACCOUNTING as one of their first year Arts subjects MUST TAKE AC210.
2. Students WHO HAVE STUDIED ACCOUNTING as one of their first year Arts subjects MUST TAKE MN215 and MUST NOT take AC210 or AC211.
3. Teaching Council of Ireland requirements.
Students who wish to pursue a career in 2nd level teaching, with Business as one of their teaching subjects, are required by the Teaching Council of Ireland to complete 10 ECTS in Accounting and 10 ECTS in Economics (as well as at least 60 ECTS in Business) in order to be able to teach Business Studies at Junior Cert level. This is only relevant for students who wish to pursue a career in 2nd level teaching, that is, for students that will take the required postgraduate Teaching qualification after their Arts degree award.
During the second year of your programme, all Arts students have the option to take Accounting in semester one and semester two. The semester one Accounting module (AC210) is compulsory and MUST be taken by all students unless students have studied Accounting as one of their other first year Arts subjects. The semester two module in Accounting (AC211) is optional and should be chosen to ensure students attain the required 10 ECTS in Accounting during their Business as a subject in Arts programme.
There are three options available to second and third year Business in Arts students to obtain 10 credits in Economics:
1. Students may choose to pursue 10 credits of Economics modules as an occasional student post-graduation. There will be a fee payable for this option.
2. Students may pursue 10 credits of Economics as supplemental modules in addition to their 60 credit load during their undergraduate study (no fee payable). Students may pursue this option in 2nd and/or 3rd year. This option is subject to timetabling constraints and the timetable will not be altered to accommodate specific students or specific module combinations.
3. Students may be granted permission to substitute one 5-credit module with one 5-credit module of economics by availing of the option to take ‘rogue’ modules. This substitution is subject to normal terms and conditions for ‘rogue’ modules as outlined in Marks and Standards. The School of Business will only grant permission to substitute one 5 ECTS Business subject in semester one of 3rd year of the Business in Arts programme.
For details on the administrative procedure for options 1-3, please refer to the All Business Moodle page: https://2015.moodle.maynoothuniversity.ie/course/view.php?id=6775. Students are advised to refer to the information here urgently, as the Economics modules recommended (EC101 and EC102) both take place in the first semester.
This recommendation is not relevant for students who do not wish to pursue a career in 2nd level teaching.
