Early Childhood Teaching & Learning (part-time): This part-time degree will prepare you to lead learning in Early Childhood Care and Education (ECCE) services. Modules include exploring curricula and pedagogy, reflective practice, supporting creativity and imagination and professional work placement practice.
The degree programme is divided into a number of modules, with varying credit weightings. A module is a block of learning in which a particular topic is taught and assessed. Most modules are stand-alone and can be studied as separate blocks.
The modules are delivered through a combination of lectures, tutorials and presentations. The degree is based on satisfactory attendance and the accumulation of credits, which are awarded on the successful completion of all assessments. Students must accumulate 180 credits to successfully obtain their honours degree.
Accredited Prior Learning (APL) is considered for exemption from a specific programme module.
Students must undertake work placements in a HSE/DES-notified early childhood setting for a minimum period. Placement hours will be dependent on recent relevant prior experience, and will be for a minimum of 600 hours over the three years of the programme. Students may use current HSE-notified early childhood work settings for the purpose of placements, with one block undertaken in a different setting. Where required, placements can be arranged in conjunction with the Programme Coordinator.
Each module on the degree programme is assessed. Assessment is continuous and, in general, methods include assignments, project work, written examinations, professional practice and presentations. All students must complete a dissertation in their final year.
Campus venue: In order to maximise student access to the combined services and expertise of the two institutions, the programme will be delivered across two
locations: NUI Maynooth Campus and Early Childhood Ireland in Hainault House, Belgard Square, Tallaght, Dublin 24.
A new state-of-the-art €12m Education Building is planned for the NUI Maynooth Campus.
Duration: 3 years (part time)
